Thornhill Carnival Training Project - 2007
A few quotes from those that took part in the project:
“We got the people together and have given something back to the community”
“Community development projects and activities for young people to be occupied and learn new skills”
“I have gone from not thinking I had any creative skills to making huge costumes”
“The carnival has given Thornhill something unique and exciting to be proud of”
The Thornhill Carnival Training Project took place from April 2007 to March 2009 and was funded by Thornhill Plus You and delivered by TWICS.
The project aimed to build on the work of local residents who had set up the Crazy Thornhill Carnival (CTC) through the TWICS delivery of accredited training courses for Thornhill residents.
The project training programme was also intended to help local residents set up a new social enterprise to incorporate both voluntary and paid carnival-related work by Thornhill residents.
The project delivered more than 151 people-weeks of job-related training, with participants gaining qualifications in NCFE Level 3 Carnival Crafts, OCN Level 3 Train the Trainer and NCFE Level 1 & 2 Carnival Crafts as well as a wide range of more informal learning outcomes.
An evaluation of the project concluded that:
"The Thornhill Carnival Training Project has been very successful in generating community engagement and development, underpinned by a wide range of informal learning activities and quite successful in developing formal training qualifications and new employment opportunities for local people.
The social enterprise developed by the project has been consistently and conscientiously set up in a form most appropriate for local community and project players".
